Description

Job Description and Position Summary
Registrar oversees all aspects of the permanent collection’s documentation as well as manages and executes incoming and outgoing loans for all museum exhibitions.  The Registrar works collaboratively with the curatorial staff to manage the care and safety of the institution’s permanent collection and assists the curatorial staff as well as all other TBM staff needing access to the museum records.  The Registrar reports directly to the Director & Chief Curator. 

Artwork Care

•  Monitors art storage and exhibition spaces for temperature/humidity, environmental  hazards, safety, cleanliness, and ongoing maintenance concerns
•  Maintains and regularly updates the museum’s facilities report, and maintains an accurate up-to-date inventory of the collection and all object locations
•  Maintains complete visual and written documentation of all collection objects in both hard-copy object files and on the museum’s database
•  Assumes proper packing, shipping, and insurance for all artworks entering or exiting the museum; maintains their written and visual condition reports
•  Manages all incoming and outgoing loan records

Data and Policy Management
•Manages and develops the museum’s object database (PastPerfect) with the goal of not merely documenting and tracking objects, but also making the database a repository of accurate and pertinent information
•  Handles incoming and out-going requests for object information and images, including rights and reproduction requests
•  Evaluates, updates, and implements the museum’s Disaster Plan and Collection Management Policy
•  Develops and implements an object photography project to add images to all object records
Other Duties
•  Assists with special events and programs as needed

Requirements

Required Qualifications
•  Bachelor’s degree in art, art history, or related field with three years experience or museum studies/collection management degree with two years experience.

Preferred Qualifications
•  Master’s degree or higher in museum studies, collection management, or related field
•  2-5 years experience in art museum registration and collections management with a thorough knowledge of best practices in conservation, insurance, object handling, and museum legal and ethical issues
•  Exceptional attention to detail and organization
•  Ability to manage multiple complex projects in a fast-paced work environment
•  Extensive knowledge of and experience with collection database software
•  Experience with imaging software, such as Adobe Photoshop
•  Strong written and oral communication skills
•  Strong interpersonal skills and flexibility
