Job Description
The Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology at Western Kentucky University seeks applicants for an Archivist to process and catalog archival resources at Mammoth Cave National Park. This is a temporary twelve-month, professional staff position, funded for three years. The anticipated beginning date for the position is February 2012.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs. • Processes and catalogs the backlog of archival resources at Mammoth Cave National Park • Formulates a location system which will provide a user-friendly means for members of the public, visiting scholars, and educators to be able to access and search the archives for personal and professional research • Supervises graduate assistants assigned to the archival project • 80% of the Archivist’s work will be conducted at the curatorial storage area in the Science and Resources Management office at Mammoth Cave National Park; the remaining 20% will take place on the WKU campus in Bowling Green • At the end of each fiscal year, the archivist will prepare an Annual Accomplishment Report, including the number of archival collections cataloged in linear feet for that fiscal year, the number of finding aids produced, and the method of curation • Trains WKU students in Folk Studies and Anthropology in archival procedures and work with them on archiving projects


Requirements
Required Qualifications: • Master's degree with an archives management emphasis or concentration and at least two years of experience processing collections • Demonstrated understanding of basic archival cataloging procedures and ability to meet NPS standards for archival work • Must have knowledge of academic discipline of folklore and be able to work productively with students, faculty, and park personnel • The duties may require the incumbent to lift moderate weight up to 25 pounds • The position is relatively sedentary, often sitting for significant periods of time, with computer work, and a large portion of the duties requires the ability to read frequently • As some of the archival material is delicate, the incumbent must be able to use fine motor skills to avoid damage to the materials when handling or manipulating them • The mental abilities needed are those of being able to concentrate for long periods as well as paying attention to detail • The work environment is that of a normal office
